Join a discussion with Linda Lewis and Daniel Jasper of the American Friends Service Committee.
Jasper writes: “AFSC has an agricultural program that is helping to improve food security for up to 72,000 North Koreans. Although this impact alone is a sufficient case for humanitarian work, the on-the-ground and consistent nature of these programs creates a space in which U.S. and North Korean organizations can identify opportunities for engagement.
“These humanitarian channels are not soft-power measures. They are concrete steps that could potentially dial back a very dangerous situation with a simple humanitarian gesture. In other words, Washington must begin to properly count the humanitarians when taking roll call for open channels, or it will continue to miss out on one of the most promising aspects of the bilateral relationship.”

Miko Peled tells a compelling personal story of transformation, compassion, and commitment. Peled’s maternal grandfather was a signer of Israel’s independence documents; his father, Matte was an Israeli hero in the 1948 war and a general and leader in the 1967 war; Miko was himself a young soldier in a Special Forces unit of the Israeli Defense Forces. His life took a new direction in 1997 when his niece, Smadar was killed by two young suicide bombers. In the months and years that followed, Miko traveled extensively throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territories in search of answers to these tragic deaths. Miko found many answers in the lives and experiences of an occupied people. Today Miko works in solidarity with Palestinian and Israeli peace activists seeking an end to the occupation and a truly just peace in the land of Palestine.
