Democrat

David Loebsack     

Dave Loebsack was born in 1952 in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from East High School then attended college at Iowa State University at Ames. Here, Loebsack earned his bachelor degree in 1974, and a master in political science in 1976. He later received a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Loebsack took a faculty position at Cornell College, a small, elite liberal arts school in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Since becoming a professor, he has been active in a variety of left-leaning political organizations. He and his wife, Theresa, met when he was in Ames. She is a second grade schoolteacher. They have four grown children.

Mariannette Miller-Meeks

Born the 4th of 8 children of a Master Sergeant in the Air Force and his wife, Mariannette spent most of her childhood in Texas.

At the young age of 16, Mariannette successfully finished an accelerated program of studies, left high school and entered college getting some financial assistance through a military program. Mariannette graduated college summa cum laude and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau the National Nursing Honor Society. At 20, she transferred from the enlisted ranks in the military into the officer corps as a nurse.

Mariannette earned her Masters of Science degree in Education from University of Southern California. She entered medical school in 1982 at the University of Texas and graduated in the top of her class.

After completing her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, Mariannette joined the faculty at the University of Michigan and was then recruited back to the University of Iowa as the first female faculty member in the department of ophthalmology.  She is the current president of the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology and is an alternate delegate to the AMA.

Mariannette met her husband Curt while they were both stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital.They have two children. Jonathon is a graduate of Colgate University in Hamilton, New York and their daughter Taylor is currently attending Wake Forest University in North Carolina, majoring in education. After 24 years of dedicated service to her country, Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks retired with an honorable discharge as a Lt. Colonel. Today she owns a small business serving Iowa families as an ophthalmologist. After a 15-month deployment following 9/11, Curt retired in 2006 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He currently serves as the Compliance Officer at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
